The backdrop that forms the therapeutic approach taken is two-fold. The first one being the understanding of past and current research in the field of psychology and the science that backs the research up. Secondly, amalgamating the therapeutic approach into an innovative implementation of these research findings during sessions.
What does that mean? It means as a therapist I am trained to make a treatment plan that is specific to your circumstance and the presenting issue that brought you to counselling. This will be done by using specific or a blend of therapeutic approaches to help you achieve the goals, you have set for yourself.
Folks have varied circumstances that require them to embark on the process of therapy. Some may be looking for self-insight or coping skills to deal with life’s stressors. Some may need support to deal with anxiety or symptoms of depression or may have relationship issues that need some navigating. Others may be in an exploratory phase of life and may not have clearly defined therapeutic goals in mind. Wherever you are in your process, I want you to know I can be of help as I have been there! My clients and I can vouch for the positive outcome therapy provides and the invaluable recognition that therapeutic support can have.
The therapeutic modalities I use include and are not limited to
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
Psychodynamic therapy with specific focus on early attachment theory
Person centered therapy
Solution focused brief therapy (SFBT)
Emotion focused therapy (EFT)
Narrative therapy
Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)
Family systems therapy
Gottman model for couples counselling
I am known to create an empathetic, non judgmental, goal oriented, safe therapeutic space for my clients eye movement desensitization and re-processing) as a therapeutic approach to my toolbox. EMDR can be defined as trauma work that was initially designed to treat PTSD in war veterans. In the recent decade research suggests positive therapeutic outcomes in a variety of other treatment areas such as when used during weekly therapy sessions to uncover traumatic events that a client wants to resolve in the now. The goal of EMDR is to assist clients by reducing the level of distress felt when recalling memories intentionally, or involuntarily. These memories/traumas can include negative past and present events and experiences. EMDR can be another effective tool to help cope with trauma.
If you are interested in EMDR sessions I will be taking in my first EMDR clients in the fall of 2024 and I will gladly add you to the wait list. Some of my current clients who appreciate my therapeutic methods are already on the wait list, but I do have a few spots open. To learn more about this type of therapy, please visit: www.emdria.org
